This is an MG42 I modeled for an abandonned fps project.

The main goal was to get rid of any Normal Maps or any High to Low poly bakes for large and medium scale details to speed up the modeling and texturing process.

To achieve the final result, I used Mid-poly techniques, weighted normals and decal meshes (to gives extra small details like in Alien Isolation and Star Citizen).

This was really interresting to experiment and had the advantage of being really fast to do and to iterate on but it has the disadvanteg to add much more triangles to the final model.

Modeled with Blender.
Textured with Substance Painter.
Rendered with Marmoset toolbag 3.

80k (weapon and bipod) and 15k traingles (drum mag and the bullet).
1x4k for the main weapon, 1x2k for the drum mag and the bullet and 1x2k for the bipod.
